Nutrition of Pomegranates

Pomegranates are yummy, but in particular their exceptionally healthy nutrients are the reason for their traditional medical use. The fruit is native in western to middle Asia, but became recently more and more popular all over the world.
Pomegranates contain a high amount of bioactive nutrients. The healthy fruit contains many flavonoids and polyphenols, more than most other fruits. It does also contain vitamin C, calcium, iron and potassium. The amount of polyphenols in pomegranates does exceed even exceptional antioxidants, such as red wine, cranberry juice or green tea.
Quality of pomegranate products does vary significantly. Nutrients, in particular the amount of the healthy polyphenols can vary too. Studies found that the pomegranate direct juice contains between 904 and 2067 mg/l polyphenols. Juices made from concentrate reached higher antioxidant values, but varied widely between 897 and 4265 mg/l polyphenols. For a healthy diet, 300 to 600 mg polyphenols are recommended. To maximize the absorption rate of your body you should consume the juice about one hour before or after main meals and never together with milk products.
